Beginning of time - 1950
This period can basically be summed up by the fact that everyone knew England (the inventors of football) were the best, so what was the point of competiting in international tournaments?
Walter Winterbottom appointed full time manager in 1946.
1950 - 1962
England played in their first World Cup in 1950, and proceeded to lose to the United States, a result Daaaaave mentions everytime he discusses "soccer".
England lost 6-3 to Hungary in 1953, a result no one cares about anymore but is still mentioned loads.
